“It was a beautiful warm evening, the sun had just gone down and a huge red full moon was rising over the water.”

We had just arrived in late July on the Outer Banks at dusk and hurried to go down to the beach in Duck, North Carolina. We quickly settled into our “new home for the week” and walked down the lane to Sand Dollar Beach. We descended the wooden stairs where the kids quickly started catching the elusive crabs as they scurried about in order to avoid the beam from their flashlights.

There was so much going on as I was frantically trying to mentally record it all so I could bring it to you through my latest painting entitled “Crab Catchers of the Outer Banks”. It was so serene and warm that night, still in the mid eighties, you could feel the heat of the day trapped in the sand that engulfed our bare feet as we walked along the shore. You could smell the fresh humid ocean air and listen to the waves lapping against the sand. In the distance, six or so miles down in Kitty Hawk, we could see and hear the distant fireworks over the tiny twinkling lights of the town. The orange and yellow glowing windows of the cottages seemed to lead our eyes down the coast. The remnants of the day…sand castles, shovels, and foot prints would soon be washed away by the rising tide brought along by the pinkish full moon reflecting off the choppy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Can you find the Big Dipper? Late night fishermen, still hoping to land that big trophy, dotted the waters edge and flashlights, belonging to the children, looked like shooting stars going up and down the beach. Chasing down crabs to see who can capture the biggest one always seems to be a favorite annual event during our one week stay on this little slice of paradise. One can actually feel the anxiety and stress of our everyday lives literally melt away while crossing the sound bridge that leads to this wonderfully relaxing world.

I hope you enjoy this painting and that it brings back the sights and sounds of a warm summer night’s walk along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There truly is so much to absorb and hopefully, through my artwork, I was able to bring a few of those cherished memories back to you and your loved ones.
