The battle lines have been drawn. The winner of the fierce battle that is about to ensue will take control of the female herd.
The early morning fog lifts over the Grand Tetons, in early September, provide a spectacular backdrop for the two romantic rival bull elk whose simultaneous bugles trumpet loudly throughout the river basin. The first round is about to begin and the rival competitors will fight until one shows its complete dominance over the weaker bull. He will be handsomely rewarded with the two elk cows, who seem totally unimpressed as they head down to the water for a cool drink.
I tried to show the breath from the bulls’ bugling and the ample color found in the sage brush and accompanying wildflowers indicative of the area. Hopefully, I was able to capture it and make the whole scene as believable as possible.
